Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. She was only a young teenager when her father who was employed as an carnival barker, died. Her mother was forced to work in jobs like waitressing, cleaning and washing. Ruth was raised in the poor Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She attended school there. However, she was only in school for two years before leaving to pursue her acting profession. The path she chose to take turned out to be filled with challenges and In New York, she obtained an opportunity to pose for stills in a magazine for crime however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. She then worked as a hat check girl at a night club before calling the shots and moving back to Boston. As an usherette, she worked in the mornings and performed at the New England Repertory Company by evening, her first acting position that was permanent. The study of drama helped her to graduate from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
